The use and misuse of language is one of the most common areas where the Evil One is effective. He is a master at it. Since God's design for language is to communicate truth, i.e. that which corresponds to reality, it is no surprise that the "Father of Lies" (John 8:44) would work especially hard to mislead and deceive . The first instance of this was in Genesis, for in chapter 2:16-17 God had issued a very clear command to Adam, "You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die" (ESV here and following). In the very next chapter (3:1), the Serpent calls this clear command into question when he poses to Eve, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden?'" Now the obvious answer to this question was, "No, God didn't say that, end of discussion."
But the question was framed in such a way as to create confusion in Eve's mind, as seen in her answer, "We may eat fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" Taking clear language and muddying it up has been the Serpent's modus operandi since the beginning of time.
Let's just apply his time-tested strategy to today's scene. The far left has undertaken an unbelievably ridiculous campaign to subvert reality through linguistic word games of its own. This became abundantly clear in last year's odd opinion by the Supreme Court majority in the Obergefell v. Hodges case. As we all know, that decision basically discarded the ontology of marriage, i.e., the union of a biological male and a biological female, as has been practiced by all cultures in all time periods, in favor of a loose and vague notion of commitment between two adults.
That idea is now devolving further. We have to go out of our way to say "biological male/biological female," for apparently, some people don't seem to like facing the reality of their own biological sex. They prefer a very fluid notion of gender based upon personal preference, and the mayor of New York City is more than willing to accommodate them! Business owners in NYC are now facing the threat of steep fines for their willful refusal to recognize an employee's self-chosen gender identity. In fact, there are over two dozen different terms available, well beyond "he/him" and "she/her."
Here is something patently obvious: labels do not change reality. I can call my dog a cat all day long, but he still remains a dog! A male is a male is a male; a female is a female is a female. If we do anything, we must call the misguided back to reality and rescue them from the world of linguistic fantasy. If the people in this country continue to permit nonsensical ideas to permeate the culture, it's only a matter of time before mass confusion will ensue.
